Golden Arrows can decide promotion-relegation fight

10 May 2016 - 13:56 By KHANYISO TSHWAKU

As the Premier Soccer League marathon enters the last two laps, Golden Arrows find themselves perfectly placed for a top-eight surge. If they were able to show the consistency that marked them as a dangerous team at the start of the season, they would not have found themselves in the lower mid-table rat race. However, for a team that jumped straight back into the Premier Soccer League after being relegated in the 2013-14 season, ninth place with 37 points from 28 matches is still cosy.In their quest for a first top-eight finish since the 2008-09 season, Arrows will have a big say in the relegation battle. They face teams who are fighting for their lives.Jomo Cosmos Wednesday evening at the Princess Magogo Stadium and the University of Pretoria at Tuks Stadium on May 21 lie between Arrows and their dream of a top-eight finish. The point gained through their goalless draw against Chippa United on Saturday at Buffalo City Municipality Stadium may be important in the bigger scheme. With Polokwane City holding SuperSport United to a 2-2 draw in Pretoria on Sunday afternoon, the gap between the latter and Arrows, eighth and ninth respectively, has been narrowed to a point.Stuart Baxter's side have the tougher route, against Mpumalanga Black Aces and Orlando Pirates, in their last two fixtures. There is also the difficult matter of Baroka FC to deal with in their Nedbank Cup semi-final on Saturday night.Arrows coach Clinton Larsen has never been the type to worry about what the teams above him are doing, but he knows if results go his way, a top-eight spot is still within reach. His team will have to meet their side of the bargain for that dream to be achieved."We'll never be happy with where we are because there's always room for improvement. We're facing two bottom-of-the-log teams in Cosmos and Tuks, and they're fighting for their lives," Larsen said."Those are going to be very difficult games for us, but we also have aspirations of finishing in the top eight and getting maximum points from those two games will give us the best chance of finishing in that bracket."..
