Fresh skippers to take the helm as Super Rugby returns

30 June 2016 - 10:05 By LIAM DEL CARME

Such was the heavy physical toll of the June Tests that the Lions, Sharks, Bulls and Stormers will resume Super rugby hostility without their regular captains on Saturday. The Lions' Warren Whiteley (shoulder joint), the Sharks' Pat Lambie (concussion), the Bulls' Adriaan Strauss (rest), and the Stormers' co-captains Frans Malherbe (rest) and Juan de Jongh (Sevens duty), will miss out as the local teams battle the pace-setting Kiwis."Some key individuals will need some time off," said sports physician Jon Patricios."This is the best time to rest and give the guys a chance to recover from niggles. You don't want a situation where the guys carry injuries into a campaign like the [Super] rugby championship."In Whiteley's absence, new Bok flank Jaco Kriel will captain a Lions team that could feature seven players who represented the Springboks against Ireland. How they will be reabsorbed into Super rugby will be revealed today when coach Johan Ackermann names his side.Prop Tendai Mtawarira, who leads the Sharks this weekend, believes his team will be the underdogs in Johannesburg. The Lions delivered performances of fist-thumping authority before the break but the visitors will hope to catch them cold.Apart from Lambie, the Sharks will miss fullback Willie le Roux through suspension, while fullback/flyhalf Joe Pietersen is on the crocked list. That leaves coach Gary Gold with few options in the last line of defence. They do, however, have the tantalising option of moving Bok wing Lwazi Mvovo into that position. Though Mvovo had a howler under the high ball for the Boks on his last visit to Ellis Park, Sharks fans will fondly recall the speedster's performance at the same venue two years ago.Former coach Jake White used him at fullback and Mvovo shredded the Lions with his bursts that helped his side surge to a 25-12 victory.Veteran Schalk Burger will lead the Stormers against the Rebels in Melbourne. The squad also boasts Eben Etzebeth, Pieter-Steph du Toit, Bongi Mbonambi, Damian de Allende and Siya Kolisi.Lappies Labuschagne will captain the Bulls in Buenos Aires against the Jaguares. The hosts have had a disappointing run and several of their players were involved in France's 27-0 humiliation of the Pumas last weekend.Australia's top woman referee, Amy Perrett, will make history as assistant referee at this weekend's clash between the Rebels and the Stormers. She will become the first woman to run touch in a Super rugby match...
