Former Bafana Bafana captain and South African Football Association (Safa) Technical Director Neil Tovey is showing a slight improvement but remains critical after suffering a heart attack on Sunday afternoon.

The African Nations Cup-winning former captain remains critical in a Durban hospital and his older brother‚ Mark Tovey‚ asked South Africans to keep him in their thoughts and prayers.

“There is a slight improvement from yesterday’s situation but Neil remains in critical condition and I ask all South Africans to keep Neil in their daily prayers‚” said Mark Tovey in a statement issued by Safa on Monday afternoon.

“The doctors have been working round the clock and we hope for the best.”

The 54-year old Tovey suffered a heart attack while training back home in Durban on Sunday afternoon and was rushed to a hospital in Hillcrest.

Safa CEO Dennis Mumble travelled to Durban after the incident and is monitoring Tovey’s condition together with his family.

Mumble said it was important for all South Africans to pray for the former Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu player at this critical time.

Tovey won over 50 caps for Bafana and was captain when SA won its only African Nations Cup title in 1996.

Tovey‚ who also works as an analyst for pay channel Supersport‚ was appointed Safa Technical Director in June last year and was given a five-year contract to help take South African football back to its former glory. - TMG Digital
