Fifth-seeded Moodie and Norman lost a nail-biting quarter-final 4-6, 7-6 (6), 10-6 against the unseeded Austrian pair of Julian Knowles and Jurgen Melzer after hovering a couple of points away from a straight-set victory.

And the third-seeded combination of India's Mahesh Bhupathi and the Bahamas' Mark Knowles lost their semifinal 7-6 (2), 6-2 to the French pair of Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Julien Benneteau, who usually devote their attention to earning success in singles competition.

Tsonga and Benneteau now play the winner of the semifinal between Knowles and Melzer and Poland's Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski for the R2-million doubles prize.

And Moodie and Norman may rue the inviting chance of gaining a prized Masters title and, at the same time, improving their prospects of qualifying for the year-end ATP World Tour doubles finals in London in November.
