McCarthy is currently on the books of fellow Premier League club Blackburn Rovers, but has been unable to command a regular first-team place.
The striker revealed yesterday that he had been told by Bafana skipper Aaron Mokoena that Portsmouth could be after his signature. Mokoena, who was a team-mate of McCarthy's at Blackburn, is now captain of Portsmouth.
"Portsmouth might be going through a rough patch but they are no Mickey Mouse team," said McCarthy, who arrived back in South Africa on Monday to join the Bafana squad for the upcoming friendlies against Japan on Saturday and Jamaica next Tuesday.
"They have attracted really good players, maybe I'll join them."
He said there were a few clubs in England and elsewhere in Europe that were interested in acquiring his services. He did, however, point out that he is a crowd favourite at Blackburn.
However, FA has banned transfers by Portsmouth until debts of £3-million are paid.
