A statement on FIFA's website said: “FIFA has today, 20 November 2009, replied to the request made by the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) to replay the 2010 FIFA World Cup South Africa play-off match held on 18 November 2009 between France and the Republic of Ireland in Paris.

“In the reply, FIFA states that the result of the match cannot be changed and the match cannot be replayed."

France qualified for the 2010 World Cup by winning the two-leg tie 2-1 on aggregate on Wednesday, although there has been outrage and claims of cheating after a blatant Thierry Henry handball led to France's decisive equaliser.

"There is no way the game can be replayed," said a FIFA source. "To do so would cause absolute chaos for football. FIFA's rules are absolutely clear."

Henry admitted he handled the ball just before crossing for William Gallas who headed home the equaliser that broke Irish hearts at the Stade de France.

While Henry was widely condemned and his integrity questioined, the French football authorities maintain that the referee, Swede Martin Hansson, and not Henry is to blame.

"... I have seen the video and it's a mistake by the referee. I don't understand why we are expected to say sorry,” said France coach Raymond Domenech.

FIFA's statement added: “As is clearly mentioned in the Laws of the Game, during matches, decisions are taken by the referee and these decisions are final."

Backed by Irish Prime Minister Brian Cowen on Thursday, the Football Association of Ireland (FAI) had lodged the request with FIFA on Thursday.

If so then Henry and the ref should be suspended and rot in the stands or in front of TVs.

I suppose this has happened only because the French have more fans (and cheats) then Ireland....

The sooner the Irish accept that it's commercially more rewarding for the French to come to Blatter's party, the sooner this debacle can be put to rest.

Thierry should hang his head in shame. He is an embarrassment to the game and to his country. If that is the way the French want to come to the finals of the great sports show on earth it does not say much for them as global citizens or the ambassadors of truth and fairness. (While IT_Spec says he thinks Thierry and the ref should be made to watch the games on TV I would not let either switch the TV on. Altogether this whole affair is disgraceful - their no other way of looking at it.

How does Blatter justify his "Fair Play" slogan now? Henry has blatantly cheated and its not the first time.He did exactly the same for Barcelona against Rangers in a Champions League match 2 years ago when he handballed them out of the competition. His legacy is now tarnished just like that of Maradonna and if he had any common decency he would stop lying about his intentions and blaming the referee. Honesty comes from within but plainly Henry is a chancer and at minimum he should be banned from the 2010 tournament.

naphy.

You are right.

Thats what this is all about. The handball was probably the most blatant I have ever seen in my life. Yet no whistle.

Cheating? It's important to first realise that football culture is different from country to country. While the English still lambast the "hand of God" other people/nations view it as an iconic moment of artistic brilliance.

For some people winning at all costs is more honourable than losing whatever the reason. I don't even consider it cheating, I consider it ingenuity.
