Spurs, Defoe equal EPL records against Wigan

Tottenham Hotspur made their highest score in the top division of English football and also equalled the league scoring record by thrashing Wigan Athletic 9-1.

The biggest winning margin in the premiership is 9-0 by Manchester United against Ipswich Town in 1995. Newcastle United beat Sheffield Wednesday 8-0 in 1999.

Jermain Defoe also became the joint individual top scorer in the Premiership, with five goals. He joined Andy Cole of Man United and Alan Shearer of Newcastle, whose achievements came in the matches already mentioned.

In other matches yesterday, Blackburn Rovers shrugged off the absence of manager Sam Allardyce, who is awaiting heart surgery, to beat his former club Bolton Wanderers 2-0 in the English Premier League.

Victory in the Lancashire derby ended Blackburn's run of 10 successive away defeats and lifted them to 11th place. The defeat left Bolton third from bottom.

The top English teams played on Saturday, Chelsea beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 4-0 to stay five points clear of champions Manchester United, who overcame Everton 3-0 at Old Trafford. Arsenal lost 1-0 at Sunderland.

In the Scottish Premier League yesterday, there was a shock result when Darren Dods' last-minute winner saw Dundee United beat Celtic 2-1. It was United's first Premier League win over the Glasgow giants in 10 years.

9-1? That is no soccer score. Wigan doesn't belong in the EPL.

I would say Wigan had a day to forget at the office, not so long ago they beat Chelsea. So, I wouldnt read much to the result, although I have to admit, such scores look terrible
