Blitzbokke dumped
The Springbok Sevens yesterday suffered the double whammy of being dumped from the IRB Sevens World Series tournament in the quarterfinals by England and being verbally abused by a group of All Black supporters.
The Blitzbokke, who were beaten 19-12 by the Dubai champions, fell at the same stage to Fiji last week.
The Boks had promised so much after predictable victories over Zimbabwe, Portugal and Argentina on Friday. Their attack was sharp and they held their defensive lines with grit and determination against the limited opposition.
England, however, were a different prospect and SA's challenge petered out in the second half. The Boks will again point to a lack of experience when hardened, cool heads were required. But England deserve kudos for keeping their shape when the odds started stacking up against them.
It was a quarterfinal that crackled with tension from the outset and the Boks hit their stride first. The typically incisive running of Cecil Afrika handed them the initial advantage, but a defensive lapse by Pieter Engelbrecht helped England restore parity.
The Boks again grabbed the lead but defensive lapses by Paul Treu's side in the closing stages cost them dearly. With the Boks chasing the game, England's John Brake broke local hearts when he scurried through for a try that sealed the victory.
As deflated as they were, having again failed to add to their solitary win in this event on home soil, Treu's team had to exercise restraint when they were verbally abused as they made their way off the field.
The Boks were due to meet Wales in the Plate semifinals.
New Zealand looked the most impressive of the teams who advanced to the semifinals.
They reached them with Fiji, Samoa and England. New Zealand were set to play Fiji after leaving Argentina scoreless. Fiji hammered Australia.
In the other semifinal Samoa were set to duel with England after they beat Wales.
