The traffic officer who shot dead a prominent cricket official outside Sahara Park Newlands was granted bail by the Wynberg Magistrate's Court, Western Cape police said.

Ian Sinclair, 50 is expected to appear in court again on March 23, Colonel Andre Traut said.

He was granted R1000 bail.

Cricket official Luke Fairweather, 49, of Mowbray was wounded in the stomach during an altercation with Sinclair in Mariendhal Road, Claremont on Wednesday.

Fairweather was approached by the traffic officer for an alleged traffic violation when the altercation ensued, Traut said.

Fairweather was wounded and later died.

Sinclair was also injured and admitted into hospital. He was later arrested for murder.
