Subramaniam Badrinath will replace the injured Sachin Tendulkar for the remaining four one-day internationals against England, the Indian cricket board said on Tuesday.

Batting superstar Tendulkar, who is on the verge of an unprecedented 100th international century, was ruled out of the series on Monday due to a toe injury.

“He has been advised rest for four weeks,” the Indian cricket board said in a statement late on Monday. “The selection committee has chosen Badrinath to replace him.”

Batsman Badrinath, 31, has so far scored just 79 runs in seven one-day internationals.

The opening one-dayer of the five-match series was abandoned due  to rain at Chester-le-Street on Saturday, with the second match to be played at Southampton on Tuesday.

Tendulkar is the eighth player to depart injury-hit India’s unhappy tour of England after Rohit Sharma, Virender Sehwag, Zaheer  Khan, Gautam Gambhir, Yuvraj Singh, Ishant Sharma and Harbhajan Singh.

His next chance to complete a century of centuries comes next month, when England tour India for five one-day internationals.

India are still looking for their first victory against England this year, having already lost the four-Test series 4-0 and a one-off Twenty20 international.
