Mbalula writes off Proteas' chances of reaching World Cup final

Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula wrote off South Africa’s chances of reaching the World Cup final off - and on again - even before the match was over.

For large parts of the second innings, the Proteas looked in a stronger position to win the match after setting World Cup co-hosts New Zealand a target of 298 to win in a rain-shortened match.

But the Twitter-savvy Mbalula was blowing the Proteas’ chance hot and cold, first inspiring belief in the team and then writing them off in a series of tweets.

But when Morne Morkel struck to remove an in-form Correy Anderson to leave the New Zealanders needing 46 off 30 balls, the minister seemed relieved.
