The Proteas have gone into lunch at 73/1 on the first day of the third Test against England in Johannesburg.
South Africa made two changes to their side - Hardus Viljoen making his debut in place of Dane Piedt while Dane Vilas was a late injury replacement for the injured Quinton de Kock.
The De Kock situation was bizarre as news broke on Thursday morning that he had slipped and injured his knee while at home on Wednesday afternoon.
Vilas, who was due to turn out for the Cape Cobras in Sunfoil Series action against the Warriors in Port Elizabeth, was flown to Johannesburg on Thursday morning as an emergency replacement.
Proteas captain AB de Villiers won the toss and chose to bat in overcast conditions at the Wanderers, but openers Stiaan van Zyl and Dean Elgar looked comfortable in the early stages against the new ball.
James Anderson and Stuart Broad were both bowling to four slips and a gully, but they didn't make the batsmen play enough in the first half an hour.
Van Zyl, under pressure following his lean spell, looked particularly good while Elgar went through a tough period against Steven Finn.
The batting pair got to 44/0 before Van Zyl went on the pull against Ben Stokes only to top edge to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow, who made good ground to take the catch.
Hashim Amla joined Elgar, who was holding on, and together they got through the remaining 40-odd minutes until the lunch break.
At the end of the session Elgar was 28* and Amla 15*.
