With teams still uncertain of the correct tactics for the new playing format, Graeme Smith of the Cobras won the toss against the Warriors at Buffalo Park, and decided to field first.

The Cape side must have thought that they had a good chance of victory when they dismissed the Warriors for only 214 in the 40th over.

However, the Warriors' powerful bowling attack was too strong. Smith failed again, and the team lost its first five wickets for 51 before Herschelle Gibbs fought back, scoring 60 off 54 balls.

No one else supported him, and the team was dismissed for 155, giving the Warriors victory by 59 runs and a bonus point.

The Titans won a close match against the Eagles at Centurion by 14 runs. Once again the side winning the toss, the Eagles, decided to field first, and lost.

The Titans raced to 254/8 off their 40 overs, Jacques Rudolph top-scoring with 76 off 83 balls.

Dale Steyn was the match-winner for the Gauteng side, taking 4/36 as the Free State side finished on 240/8.
