Tiger's still got his stripes
TIiger Woods recaptured some of his old form on Saturday, shooting 65 in the second round of the Deutsche Bank Championship just a day after a dismal 72.
That put him seven shots behind the leader, Jason Day of Australia, on 137, along with South Africa's Ernie Els.
The tournament in Boston, Massachusetts, ended early today, South African time.
Woods made the cut at least; Padraig Harrington again failed to do so. The Irishman, a three-times major champion, but considered a lucky inclusion in the European team for the Ryder Cup, has failed to make the cut in three majors this year.
Despite his 65, which was the second-best round of the day after American Brandt Snedeker's 64, Woods has been erratic since returning to the PGA.
Following his uneven 72, he shrugged off a stiff morning breeze and attacked the TPC Boston course with a bogey-free second round that was six under par.
He looked more like the old Tiger, chipping in from off the green playing a succession of accurate tee and approach shots.
"I hit it really good," he said "I missed a few, but the only bad putt I hit was at 16.
"Other than that I really rolled it well. I felt better, energetic and ready to go," Woods said afterwards.
"It was a clean card and could have been a little lower. I had to shoot a good one if I was going to move on - and I did that."
The 14-times major winner came into the tournament, the second of four play-off events, ranked 65th on the FedExCup points list.
Only the top 70 players in Boston advance to this week's BMW Championship outside Chicago, and Woods had to make the cut to have any chance of progressing.
He is still not completely safe, needing to finish around 50th to qualify.
- Another low round in the weekend's golf came from 46-year-old Miguel Angel Jimenez of Spain, who carded a 27-year career low of 61 in the second round of the European Masters at Crans Montana in Switzerland at the weekend.
It helped him to win his third tournament on the European Tour. He held off his Ryder Cup teammate Edoardo Molinari to win by three shots.
