European Ryder Cup wildcard Luke Donald has confessed he "went to pieces" when told he had been selected for the team during his bid to win the Barclays tournament eight days ago.

Donald, who recovered his composure this week to finish runner-up in the Deutsche Bank Championship, was unhappy that European players were told whether they had made the team or not during the Barclays FedExCup event.

Donald was chosen by captain Colin Montgomerie along with Padraig Harrington but fellow Britons Paul Casey and Justin Rose missed out.

“I found out after 10 holes on Sunday at the Barclays. I was going along nicely, out in 28, then I found out — and I went to pieces,” Donald said in his diary on the Mizuno.com website.

“It would be nice to find out at the end of a tournament, certainly not during a tournament, anyway. It’s a little bit distracting. It was a bittersweet moment.

“Talking to the other players, it would have been nice to have the decision made on the Monday. It’s something we hopefully can review and see if it can be changed. It was definitely distracting to the guys playing over in the Barclays.”

The 32-year-old Englishman, on the winning side in 2004 and 2006, said he thought Europe’s wildcard system was flawed with Montgomerie announcing his three picks more than a week before Corey Pavin chose his four.

“It’s a logical answer for the two captains to pick the teams at the same time, so there’s no advantage, perceived or not,” Donald said.

Europe will bid to regain the Ryder Cup from the US at Celtic Manor, Wales, from Oct. 1-3.
