Da Silva storms to victory

Brazilian Adilson da Silva coasted through the front nine in 32 in the final round and closed at four-under-par to win the R540 000 Vodacom Origins of Golf event at Sishen Golf Club in Kathu on Friday.
The victory, however, looked a little doubtful for a few holes on the back nine as he dropped three shots in three holes from the 12th to the 14th, and let the opposition back at him after he had built up a commanding four-stroke cushion.
In the end, Da Silva carded eighth birdies for a two-stroke win over rookie Allan Versfeld, whose final round 68 was not enough to catch the Brazilian.
The day began for Da Silva with birdies on the second and fourth, but his round really took off with a trio of birdies, which started at the sixth.
The run included a 40-foot putt on the seventh and a boxed chip from 50 yards on the eighth, and Da Silva seemed untouchable.
He made the turn at 10 under par, four shots clear of the competition.
"It just seemed to all go right," Da Silva said.
"I really got confidence from that 40-foot putt on seven."
The problems he had on that three-hole stretch on the back nine started when he was warned for slow play on the 11th.
"It did affect me, and it just offset my focus a bit," he said.
On the 12th, his next hole, he double-dropped, and carded a further bogey on the 14th.
But the eight-time winner refocused and shot birdie on the par-five 15th.
"That was the shot that made me relax, and I knew I could win from there," he said.
Rookie of the Year leader Versfeld matched Da Silva's 68 in the final round and thus closed the day in the same position as he started, two strokes shy of the lead.
Devondes Botes, who finished third, also carded four-under-par 68, and closed the tournament in 209 strokes, alone in third.
Bryce Easton finished fourth at six under, with Jean Hugo, a two-time winner in the Vodacom Origins of Golf series this year, taking fifth at five under.
