‘I would have given anything to play in the Olympics’ – Gary Player criticises player no-show

Legendary golfer Gary Player has attacked his fellow sportsmen for pulling out of world sport’s premier showcase‚ the Olympics‚ saying they are hurting the game.Golf is returning to the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro‚ Brazil‚ in August for the first time since the 1904 Games.“I am sad and disappointed that several top players have withdrawn from the Olympic Games in Rio. Not just South Africans. I would have given anything to play in the Olympics‚” he said in a statement issued via his official Twitter account."Players withdrawing hurt the game of golf‚" he said‚ remarking on how the Olympics was a big stage on which the best players should showcase their sport.It was also a moment that should be savoured as it was an experience that no living professional golfer has experienced‚ he said.Now 80‚ Player is still on the circuit and famously still beats off the competition in his age categories. In 1983 he established the Player Foundation to aid under-privileged children and impoverished communities‚ which has so far raised more than $60 million.“Players today make so much and should be giving back‚” Player said of the current high-earning stars of the game.“The Olympics is one way they can do that since there is no prize money.”Players who have pulled out of the Games include SA’s best known sportsmen - Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel.“This certainly impacts South Africa’s chances for a gold medal. No doubt they would have made our team even stronger‚” Player commented.International players reported to be unavailable for selection include Adam Scott and Vijay Singh.Player said he would attend the Olympics‚ walking with pride alongside the South African team at the opening ceremony...
