Five great quips from 'Father Christmas' Mbalula at SA Paralympians' arrival
Team South Africa returned home from the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games and received a heroes' welcome at OR Tambo International Airport on Tuesday morning.
The curtain came down on the Paralympic Games on Sunday and the South African athletes picked up seven gold‚ six silver and four bronze medals.
But it was Sports Minister Fikile Mbalula who stole the show at the airport when he added to his growing repertoire of quips.
1. "There is only one Father Christmas in sport. And that is Fikile Mbalula... and (deputy minister) Gert Oosthuizen."
2. "As much as we love Usain Bolt‚ we have many of our own Bolts in South Africa."
3. "Our Paralympians are a bunch of winners‚ not a bunch of losers."
4. "I want to repeat that athletes should graduate from driving small cars to driving big cars - Lamborghinis... It is not the exclusive right of criminals to drive big cars. I want athletes to be those role models."
Bonus quote from Sascoc president Gideon Sam taking a swipe at national broadcaster SABC for lack of coverage of the Paralympics:
"I'm not afraid of anybody‚ I will be honest... It is not right that our broadcaster did not go with our team to Rio. So I would like to sit down with the SABC."
