Shumi Gerbaba of Ethiopia won the Stockholm Marathon on Saturday in 2 hours, 14 minutes, 7 seconds, in a race marred by a serious bus accident.

Gerbaba broke away from Dominic Pius Ondoro of Kenya in the last few kilometers. Pius Ondoro ended second in 2:14.23 and his countryman Kenneth Korir was third.

Sweden’s Isabellah Andersson became the first woman to win the title for four years straight. She finished in 2:37.28, ahead of second place Eri Okubo from Japan who ran 2:38:58.

Police said a bus raced out of control down a set of steps and into a busy square during the marathon, injuring six people.

One man was seriously injured, while four other adults and a child were taken to hospital with lighter injuries, hospital officials said.

The square, which is located near a public transport hub, was crowded with people heading to view the marathon when the accident occurred. The cause of the crash was not immediately clear.
