The Proteas secured a quarterfinal spot with a 57-38 victory over Botswana at the Netball World Championships finishing second in Pool C.
A thumping in their opening game by Jamaica, who won all their round-robin matches, puts South Africa up against New Zealand in the next stage of the championships in Singapore.
South Africa coach Elize Kotze was optimistic before the tournament of avoiding the world's No1 team, but the loss to the Caribbean side means South Africa look likely to bow out of the tournament in the quarters.
Worse still, they might face Malawi in the playoff for fifth - a team that has been the tormentors of the Proteas in tournaments past. In last year's Commonwealth games, Malawi denied South Africa fifth spot. - Staff reporter
Other results from yesterday
Malawi 73 Barbados 44, New Zealand 75 Trinidad and Tobago 23, Fiji 48 Wales 38, England 95 Malaysia 22, Sri Lanka 20 Australia 97.
