South African swimmer Karin Prinsloo continued her medal haul on  Wednesday, adding two more to the four she has already won in the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.

The South African swimming team won 11 medals on the third-day of the five-day gala, to bring their total to 34.

   Prinsloo narrowly missed out on the gold medal in the woman’s 100m backstroke, where she was up against African record holder Kirsty Coventry, of Zimbabwe.

   However, the 21-year-old South African did not give her more esteemed opponent a free pass and kept up with her for most of the race.

   Coventry touched first in 1:00.86 with Prinsloo less than a second behind in 1:01.46 and Amel Melih, of Algeria, third in 1:07.27.

   Prinsloo struck gold later as part of the women’s 4x100m relay team of Natasha de Vos, Roxanne Tammadge and Suzaan van Biljon.

   In the women’s 400m freestyle, Roxanne Tammadge won her first gold medal after losing out on a podium spot on the first day.

   Compatriot Rene D’ Warnes took the early lead, but ran out of steam as the race progressed and relinquished it to Tammadge.

   Tammadge held on to win the race in 4:19.73, with Tunisia’s Sara  Lajnef touching shortly behind her in 4:20.75 and D’ Warnes clinching bronze in 4:21.58.

   In the second final of the evening, Kenya’s Dunford brothers, David and Jason, took the gold and silver medals in the men’s 100m freestyle. South Africa’s Gideon Louw had to settle for third spot.

   David Dunford touched first in 49.48 seconds with his older brother Jason clocking 49.71, and Louw 49.80.

   The South African duo of Darren Murray and Charl Crous were involved in a two-horse race in the men’s 200m backstroke.

   They received an early challenge from Tunisia’s Taki Mrabet, but  the pair pulled away over the final lap.

   Murray finished first in 2:01.74 with Crous behind him in 2:01.88.

   Suzaan van Biljon won her second gold medal of the Games as she led from start to finish in the women’s 50m breaststroke clocking 32.88sec.

   In the men’s 50m butterfly, Neil Watson and Garth Tune had to settle for second and third as Jason Dunford finished well ahead of  them in 23.57.

   Watson claimed silver, posting a time of 24.31 with Tune taking the bronze in 24.70.

   The men’s quartet of Jasper Venter, Riaan Schoeman, Darian Townsend and Leith Shankland finished the day off with a gold medal  in the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay.
