The entry deadline for the Soweto Marathon has been extended until midnight October 12, organisers say.

The deadline for the 10km, 21km and 42km races on November 2 was originally set for yesterday, but was extended because of a late influx of requests.

“We felt that it was important to make sure all athletes had an opportunity to enter the Nike Soweto Marathon, as such we carefully monitored online and manual registrations during the last week of September and took the decision to extend the registration date,” race director Banele Sindani said in a statement.

Sindani added that given the busy running calendar many athletes were not able to register for the race before as they needed to determine their fitness level and ensure all injuries were dealt with.

“Given that this is a race for the people we felt it important to try to accommodate as many requests from athletes wanting to take part in the 2014 race.”
