“You f…ing champion!” aren’t the words normally reserved for the guy who finishes second. But that’s what the father of Jared Crous uttered as he embraced his son who had just delivered an unexpected Olympic qualifying time - by one-hundredth of a second - in the 200m breaststroke in Durban last night.Cameron van der Burgh lifted the national crown in a 2min 10.13sec personal best at the King’s Park pool.Apart from Van der Burgh and Le Clos‚ it was a bad night for SA swimmingCrous touched second in 2:11.65‚ but the way he celebrated in the water on seeing the time you would have thought he had won‚ Van der Burgh congratulating him on his effort.Crous had earlier in the week failed to meet the qualifying mark in his main event‚ the 100m breaststroke.“On the night of the 100m I was very despondent‚ I was quite down‚” said Crous‚ the seventh swimmer of the SA championships to qualify for the Rio Olympics in August.“My coach said ‘keep your chin up‚ use it as a learning curve for the 200m’.“The 100m was my main race‚ I hadn’t trained for the 200m‚” added the Tuks swimmer‚ who trains fulltime and will enrol to study next year.Crous was doubtful whether he would have made it without Van der Burgh leading the way. “I don’t know. I was lucky he was there … [I thought to myself] step on his wave and see how fast I can go.”Roland Schoeman disqualifies himself from Olympic relay contentionCrous beamed his way through interviews‚ but when his father Juan reached him in the media area‚ the two hugged each other hard and long‚ their tears flowing amid sobs.Van der Burgh‚ 27‚ almost seemed more pleased for Crous than he was with his own performance.“I’m quite happy with the time but I’m just happy we’ve got a second qualifier aboard.“It was a good race‚ everybody pushed each other. Just so stoked … at least we’ve got some young guys coming up and pushing me to also be at my best.“It’s nice to have another guy in the call room with us.”Ayrton Sweeney‚ who achieved a qualifying time a year ago‚ missed out on Thursday night‚ ending third in 2:14.36.Backstroker Reid fifth fastest in the 100mCalvyn Justus made a late surge to take the 100m freestyle title and with it a spot in the 4x100m medley relay team alongside Chad Le Clos‚ Van der Burgh and Christopher Reid that will try to qualify for the Games in a time trial tonight. He broke 50 seconds for the first time in his career‚ clocking 49.88. Training partner Myles Brown was second in 50.21.Reid was considering scratching from the 200m backstroke final tonight to focus on his leg in the medley relay‚ the final event of tonight’s proceedings.“I have to discuss this with my head coach because we can rock the world with that relay‚” said the US-based student‚ who was 0.09sec off the qualifying mark in the semifinals last night.Reid qualified in the 100m earlier in the week.Tatjana Schoenmaker will look to become the first woman of the gala to achieve a qualifying time when she competes in the 200m breaststroke final tonight. She went 2:27.48 in the semifinals‚ just 0.54sec off the qualifying standard she needs.- TMG Sport..
