Mbalula blooper: Sports Minister confuses Rio with Athens

02 June 2016 - 17:46 By David Isaacson

It might have seemed like Greek for some of the audience when Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula confused Rio de Janeiro with Athens on Thursday. He was speaking at the announcement that Telkom would contribute R4-million to the prize fund for SA’s medal winners at the Rio Olympics in August and the Rio Paralympics in September.“We want our national anthem to be sung on the podium of Athens like we did in London [2012]‚” Mbalula told athletes at the function in Centurion‚ near Pretoria. The Athens Olympics were held in 2004.Mbalula made up for his "Mblooper" - he earned applause when he teasingly dissed Telkom’s Boltspeed campaign‚ using Usain Bolt to sell its fibre product.“I’m happy we don’t talk Boltspeed‚ we talk Caster Semenya speed and Wayde van Niekerk speed‚ Anaso Jobodwana speed and we’re going to defeat Usain Bolt very soon so that we can be on those billboards of Telkom‚” said Mbalula.Telkom was criticised for launching Boltspeed soon after the 2015 world championships‚ where Van Niekerk won the 400m world title and Jobodwana and Sunette Viljoen took bronze in the men’s 200m and women’s javelin. A Telkom official said the Bolt speed campaign had been planned long before the world championships‚ and that the decision to sponsor the SA team to Rio was made before the campaign started.- TMG Digital..
