The City of Ethekwini (Durban) has been warned it will be stripped of the 2022 Commonwealth Games unless it meets a series of conditions by November 30. Durban was handed the right to host the games in September 2015 after being left as the sole bidder when Edmonton‚ Canada withdrew from the process in February 2015.However‚ the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has decided South Africa must get its preparations under way by the end of November or lose the Games. CGF president Louise Martin said in a statement after the body’s annual general assembly in Edmonton on Friday: “As a first priority‚ the CGF membership resolved to continue to work with the South African Government and their partners to support and advise them on their first steps and initial obligations on the journey towards 2022.“It is with humble appreciation that a number of Members‚ at our Annual General Assembly in Edmonton today‚ 7 October 2016‚ reaffirmed our positive commitment to realise our collective ambitions to host a Games in Durban‚ and in Africa for the first time ever.“We all truly believe in the inspirational and impactful potential of a Games in Africa.“However‚ we also appreciate that there are concerns about the current progress to plan. We are still six years out‚ so now is the time to reinforce our commitments in partnership with Durban – as we sincerely hope – or look at alternatives.“To support this‚ a motion at today’s Assembly was therefore carried to firstly continue to support South Africa and Durban to achieve satisfactory resolution of all outstanding matters; or – as a last resort – to secure an alternate host‚ if outstanding matters are not resolved by 30th November 2016.”Durban 2022 is still without a Local Organising Committee, and the South African government has also not signed the host city contract‚ nor confirmed underwriting arrangements nor made any payments to the CGF.The resolution taken at the CGF’s assembly resolved to:a) Endorse the President’s Report and Executive Board’s actions to support South Africa and Durban in hosting the Commonwealth Games in 2022 and to achieve a satisfactory resolution of all outstanding matters to the satisfaction of the Executive Board;b) In the event that the Executive Board cannot achieve‚ to its satisfaction‚ resolution of all matters with the South African government and SASCOC by the 30th of November 2016‚ recognising the exceptional circumstances‚ the Executive Board is delegated the authority to secure an alternate host under no less favourable conditions and reports back to CGAs‚ notwithstanding the provisions of article 20.3 of the Constitution.South African Sports and Olympic Committee CEO Tubby Reddy told the CGF assembly he remained confident of Durban’s commitment to staging the 2022 Games.“There is no deviation from hosting the Games. It’s about what the South African Government will commit too‚” he said.Durban failed to establish a local organising committee within a deadline of 180 days of being awarded the Games and also has not made its first payment to the CGF of sterling1.5 million (R25 million) for hosting the event. The 2018 Commonwealth Games will be held in Gold Coast‚ Australia.TMG Digital/TMG Sport..
