East London boxing promoter Andile Sidinile will have to pay back R800 000 in sponsorship he received from the Buffalo City Metro last year after he failed to host a tournament in December and was suspended by Boxing South Africa recently.

BCM mayor Xola Pakati told the Daily Dispatch on Wednesday that the metro was trying to recover the funds which were allocated to Sidinile’s boxing promotion company Sijuta Boxing Promotions in December.

The decision to recover the funds came after BSA suspended the licence of Sijuta Boxing Promotions on February 15 following a disciplinary hearing held in December.

Sidinile was suspended over non-payment of boxers.

Pakati said it was only fair that now that Sidinile was no longer eligible to host boxing tournaments‚ he pays back the municipal funds.

“The matter was brought to my attention by [councillor Xolani] Witbooi recently. I am aware that a letter has been sent to Sidinile. If Sidinile is no longer eligible to host the tournament he must repay the municipality.

"The municipality is well within its rights to want the money back‚” Pakati said. Sidinile refused to comment on the matter when the Daily Dispatch contacted him.
