At least 15‚000 runners from across the continent will be vying for the R100‚000 top prize during the main race of the Mandela Day Marathon in Howick outside Pietermaritzburg in August.

The sixth edition of the annual Mandela Day Marathon was officially launched by the KwaZulu-Natal departments of arts and culture‚ and sports and recreation‚ on Thursday. The full marathon starts in Pietermaritzburg's Mbali township and finishes at the Nelson Mandela Capture Site near Howick.

Entries for this year’s race will open on Friday and close at midnight on July 31. The number of entries has been capped at 15‚000 for all races. The main prize for the main 42km race will be R100‚000‚ R20‚000 for the 21km race and R10‚000 for the 10km race.
