First vuvuzelas spotted at Games

Sapa | 01 October, 2010 08:500 Comments

The first two vuvuzelas were spotted – and heard – in the athletes village at the Commonwealth Games on Thursday - and they didn't even belong to South Africans.

Two athletes from the Cook Islands carried the instrument that was a theme of the 2010 Fifa World Cup and they weren't afraid to blow them.

Clearly they are either loved – or loathed – around the globe.

The news for the rest of the athletes village, and seemingly the Games itself, is there is going to be a lot more noise coming from block 22, an eight-storey high apartment building that houses the 147 South Africans competing from October 3-14 .

There are bags of vuvuzelas that haven't been opened yet, but are designed to be carried and blown by Team SA in the main stadium in Sunday's opening ceremony.

Given the controversy over the vuvuzela – they're banned at rugby grounds like Newlands in South Africa, as well as at English Premier League soccer games – once the vuvuzelas start up, there could be some interesting moments in the village.

One of the reasons is the country occupying the apartments right next to South Africa is arch-rivals Australia.

Let the fun and Games begin!
