There were some close calls as more strength-versus-strength matches were played, and it is ironic that two of the games between four of the country’s best brought such big wins.
** Grey, who scored three tries to none, were up 10- 0 at the break after two tries before Monnas’ Marais Schmidt slotted two penalties that brought them back into the game with his team’s only score. Three more penalties and a converted try by Grey gave them the 26-6 win that could have been bigger but for some poor Grey College kicking in the first half.
** At St John’s the home side ended their tournament without a win as they went down 26-24 against the FNB Imitational XV, with Paul Roos (29-9) showing their class against Pretoria Boys High.
Jeppe, buoyed by their derby win over KES and a good performance against Paul Roos on Thursday, came down to earth as Paarl Boys won comprehensively, 17-3.
Nelspruit drew 7-all with Helpmekaar while Dale edged Wynberg 14-11, and the Lions Invitation XV received another hiding, this time from St John’s Harare (35-9).
