'Boks don't need a Plan B' - Div
Springbok coach Peter de Villiers is unapologetic about the team's oft-maligned game plan.
The Boks have been accused of unimaginative rugby with little variation from the suffocating tactics that rely on sound set-piece play, defence and tactical kicking.
"Everybody knows what everybody is up to in world rugby at the moment," the Springbok coach said yesterday.
"Everybody knows, and they can stop us if they want. It's how we execute our plays on the day that will make the difference."
De Villiers hinted that the recipe for success hinged on more than just game plans.
"Many people say you must have a Plan B and a Plan C, but I don't believe in that nonsense. You need one plan, and to execute it properly. Within that plan you can have different patterns."
He singled out Morne Steyn, who could break opponents' hearts with his pinpoint kicking.
"With Morne in the team it will force more teams to kick because they don't want us to play [in their area]. The more they kick, the more we can dictate the game. With Frans Steyn at the back, if they kick badly he can nail them. That puts a lot of pressure on your opponents."
The coach also hinted that he would, as far as possible, stick to what he perceived as his best team.
"I think we should use the opportunity to sharpen the guys. We had eight weeks of no rugby, then two weeks of rugby, three weeks of no rugby and in-between injuries.
"We must do the right thing. You must play every game as if it were a final, to get the guys sharp and to work on combinations."
