Morne Steyn hopeful of longer stay in Springbok team after recall

15 June 2016 - 15:08 By Chumani Bambani

Morne Steyn’s recall to the Springbok side has reignited a desire to continue representing his country‚ for the next two years at least. As the old saying goes: one man’s pain is another man’s gain.It took the injury of Pat Lambie - who suffered a concussion in the Boks’ defeat to Ireland last weekend - for Stade Francais’ Steyn‚ who was on holiday in SA‚ to find his way back in the Boks mix. “Rugby is a strange game‚” Steyn said about his surprise call up from Allister Coetzee‚ which saw him join the Boks in camp in Johannesburg on Monday.“One moment you think you are out of it‚ the next I’m back in it again with a few new guys‚ new faces. It’s just great to be back“Four weeks were planned – what I’d be doing where I’d be going – but that has all been put aside. The focus is on Saturday now.” How the universe has aligned Steyn’s stars has given the former Bulls pivot hope of adding many more tests to the 60 he has already played in the green and gold. The 31-year-old has committed himself to giving his all and impressing both in the build-up and in Saturday’s second test against the Irish at Ellis Park.“I spoke to my wife about it‚” Steyn said about the future of his international career.“It’s tough for her to travel with my two boys. We just said that we would give it another year and see how it goes. Handre Pollard is also out injured‚ so you never know what will happen.“Every training session‚ every game‚ I will give it 100 percent. Maybe I can go another two to three years – you’ll never know.” Steyn has had a colourful and fruitful career which has seen him win the under-21 World Cup in 2005‚ the Currie Cup with the Bulls twice and three Super Rugby titles with the Pretoria side. He also added a French Top 14 title with Stade Francais in the 2014/15 season. As a man with vast experience who is knowledgeable about the game‚ Steyn has been impressed with the talent of flyhlaves in SA.“I watched a few of the Super Rugby games and saw Elton (Jantjies)‚ Pat (Lambie) and a couple of the younger guys like Garth (April) and they were doing so well. Me‚ I’m a little bit older now‚ so it’s a new era now‚” he said.“If you look at the team there are about three or four guys with more than 50 caps. A new era is only good for South Africa.” What does Steyn think he will be bringing into the new era Bok team under Coetzee?“[Last] Saturday our kicking game was not at the top standard that it is usually at‚” he assessed.“That is the thing we are trying to put in place now‚ a little bit more kicking‚ which is one of my strengths. So hopefully I can be able to bring that into the team.Steyn is likely to be named on the bench as the backup pivot behind Jantjies when Coetzee announces his side for Saturday’s clash against Ireland on Thursday. - TMG Digital..
