Allister Coetzee has given “second chances” to the Springbok side that were beaten by Ireland last week by making only two injury-enforced changes for the second test of the three-match series at Ellis Park on Saturday.

As expected‚ Elton Jantjies will don the No10 jersey for the first time in the green and gold following the concussion to Pat Lambie last weekend in Cape Town.

The only other change in the starting XV will see lock Pieter-Steph du Toit graduating from the bench as he replaces Lood de Jager‚ who has struggled with a calf injury from last weekend's game at Newlands Stadium.

This week could prove to be a case of do or die for some players who failed to fire last weekend‚ but Coetzee believes his charges will grab the second chance that has been afforded to them to prove themselves.

“We are starting on a clean slate this week‚” said Coetzee.

“I am giving all of the players an opportunity to redeem themselves and make sure that they get it right.

“I believe in second chances. I believe the players see a need to improve this weekend. If they don't then obviously I will need to look at other players.”

Coetzee was very clear of what he expected from his charges – nothing less than a marked improvement that resembles the talent that is in the squad.

“The intention is to come with a better performance that is in line with the ability of this team‚” the coach said.

“It will be a team that will play together for the second time‚ a team that looked at the basics and worked hard this week.”

Coetzee made further changes on the bench.

Lions duo – lock Franco Mostert and utility back Ruan Combrinck – have an opportunity to make their test debuts at their provincial home ground at Ellis Park.

Mostert will take Du Toit's place on the bench‚ while Combrinck replaces Jesse Kriel as backline cover. Combrinck will either come on at wing or at fullback in the clash.

Ireland coach Joe Schmidt also made five changes to their starting XV.
