Bulls need to maul Jaguares in Argentina to keep title hopes alive

The Bulls will be fighting to keep their Super Rugby hopes of a playoff spot alive in their remaining three matches of the competition. The Pretoria side travelled to Argentina on Wednesday where they will face the Jaguares in Buenos Aires after a three-week break from Super Rugby. When the Bulls were last in action before the international break‚ the Pretoria side suffered a humbling 20-56 defeat to a rampant Lions side at home at Loftus Versfeld. The defeat stuttered the Bulls’ plans of an easy path to the playoff stages of the competition‚ making the remaining three pool matches crucial if they intend on remaining in the hunt for a fourth Super Rugby crown. “It’s a big game. It is not only a game that we need to win‚ but one that we really want to win. We are fired up for the rest of the season‚” Bulls stand-in captain Lappies Labuschagne said.“We know that we have to rectify what we need to from before. But we also know that what is in the past must remain in the past. We are looking forward and we are really positive about what lies ahead.”The three-week break has been good in terms of getting the team to reflect on their season so far that has seen them win seven‚ draw one and lose four matches. The Bulls will have to win their fixtures against the Jaguares‚ Sunwolves and Cheetahs‚ and also rely on the misfortunes of either the Sharks or Stormers‚ who are still within reach on the South African conference.“There is nothing we can do about it now‚” Labuschagne said about his side’s last outing against the Lions.“In the three weeks we have had time to reflect on the game and get out heads back on the game that we want to focus on. There is a positive attitude and everyone is looking forward to the next three weeks. We want to build on that and we want to finish strong.” The down side of the break is that the Bulls have suffered immensely from a long list of injuries sustained by players on national duties and others who have been ruled out after being injured at training. However‚ the side remains hopeful that they have sufficient personnel to see them through the remainder of the competition.“There are a few guys who got injured during training‚ and that is never nice‚” said Labuschagne.“But throughout the year we have built a big group of guys and the next players to come in have got to make a step up‚ this is a big opportunity for them. We will have to wait and see what they come up with‚ but I’m sure they are ready and prepared.” Labuschagne is stepping in for captain Adriaan Strauss‚ who has been rested for the tour to Argentina. The side’s long list of injuries includes prop Trevor Nyakane‚ locks RG Snyman and Grant Hattingh‚ flanker Deon Stegmann and centre Jan Serfontein; while the long-term casualties include flyhalf Handre Pollard and fullback Warrick Gelant‚ both of whom are expected back on the field next year only. – TMG Sport..
