Lions now target Super Rugby trophy

04 July 2016 - 16:50 By Chumani Bambani

After securing a Super Rugby playoff spot‚ the next focus for the Lions is winning their first title in the southern hemisphere competition.Johan Ackermann’s charges are winding down the pool stages of the Super Rugby competition with two matches remaining – against the Southern Kings at home at Ellis Park and away to the Jaguares in Buenos Aires. The Lions’ 37-10 win against the Sharks on Saturday ticked the first box in the Johannesburg side’s to-do list for the season. Their next target now is to bring the Super Rugby trophy to sit alongside their Currie Cup silverware in the cabinet at Ellis Park.“We want to win it‚” Lions coach Ackermann said.“I think every team that will be in the playoffs wants to win it.“But there are tough games still ahead‚ especially when you get to those knockout games.”The Lions have made great strides in the Super Rugby competition since Ackermann took over the coaching reins in 2013.In his first season at the helm the side had been sidelined from the competition after they finished at the bottom of the log the previous season and were forced to make way for the Kings’ first taste of Super Rugby action. In 2014 the side returned to the competition and finished in 12th place in a 15-team tournament. There was an improvement in 2015 when the side narrowly missed out on a playoff spot as they finished in eighth place. The current season has been the best the side has had in the history of Super Rugby.“It was a process‚ where we started in 2014 and where we are now. A lot of close games we lost because of a lack of composure. What I saw [on Saturday] was a team really maturing – that is a good sign‚” said Ackermann.“In all areas we have grown in the past two to three years and there were some good performances where we saw that growth. But we are still not there yet and we have not achieved anything. "So the decision-making and growth can still improve. The confidence is there‚ the experience is getting there.” The Lions coach cautions though that the side‚ despite being at the summit of the combined Super Rugby log currently‚ there is no reason to celebrate.“In 2014 we were 12th‚ last season we missed the playoffs and now we are in the playoffs‚ so our growth has definitely been upwards‚” said Ackermann.“But we will not have achieved anything if we do not get to that final.”The Lions’ next match will be on Friday night when they take on the Kings in Johannesburg.Ackermann will name his team for the clash on Tuesday. - TMG Digital..
