Hurricanes bench All Blacks wing Savea for Sharks clash

All Black wing Julian Savea is one fewer problem the Sharks will have to worry about – at least for the first 50-60 minutes of their Super Rugby quarterfinal against the Hurricanes in Wellington. The World Cup winner was surprisingly benched for the clash‚ with coach Chris Boyd preferring to start with Jason Woodward out wide.It was a decision that caught Sharks coach Gary Gold out when members of the media informed him of the news at a press briefing. "I didn't know that. Is he? I am surprised to hear that‚” Gold said. “The All Blacks did that to him [Savea] earlier in the year and got the best results out of him." While Boyd has had the luxury of leaving out the try-machine‚ Gold has the opposite problem after flyhalf Pat Lambie was denied clearance by South Africa‚ New Zealand‚ Australia and Argentina Rugby (SANZAAR) to tour after not playing four matches in the competition. Lambie played three matches for the Sharks before the June international break after a lengthy shoulder-injury lay-off and was then concussed while playing for the Springbok in the first Test against Ireland on June 11. He hasn’t played since although he had been cleared for this weekend. That was until SANZAAR blocked him. Gold was unhappy but he won’t be using it as an excuse anymore. "They were the rules in the beginning and it's difficult to bleat about it afterwards‚” Gold said. "Is it a risk? I didn't think so‚ given that he came back before June and you'd think he'd at least be able to get four games in. “He got three games in and he's missed out on another potential four. All we needed was for him to be named in the squad for one. It is what it is. There's quite a few things that need to be looked at‚ but they made the rules clear.” On the up side Gold named Bok fullback Willie le Roux and centre Paul Jordaan in the starting lineup after both were sidelined with injuries in recent weeks. It’s a timely boost in the back division against a ruthless team that has scored 61 tries this season – 21 more than the Sharks have managed. Springbok squad member Garth April will start in the No 10 jersey again where he will come face to face with sensational All Black star Beauden Barrett.New Zealand is a country with more game-breakers than a PlayStation recycling factory‚ and Barrett is the best of them. Regardless of the outcome‚ April will be a better player for the experience. The Hurricanes back-line also sees Matt Proctor return to centre which necessitated Woodward’s move to the wing. Up front props Loni Uhila and Ben May return to the front row in the only changes to the side that thumped the Crusaders last week. "We had some tough choices‚ but we believe we've picked the best team to play the Sharks‚" Boyd said. "We've got some real depth and at the end of the day we pick the team on form and what we think is best for the team. Loni Uhila‚ Jason Woodward and Willis Halaholo were all very good against the Crusaders and they've forced our hand for this match." Although the Sharks only arrived in Wellington in the early hours of Thursday morning local time‚ Gold said there was confidence within the squad that they could cause a surprise. Earlier in the year the Sharks beat the Hurricanes 32-15 in Durban and also enjoyed a good tour of New Zealand. They beat the Highlanders 15-14 in Dunedin and lost a thriller 24-22 against the Chiefs in New Plymouth. While the venue and circumstances are different this time around‚ those memories have given the Durban side belief. "In the past South African teams have come here and been given no chance of beating any Kiwi teams‚” Gold said. “What we did on our tour to New Zealand and our game against the Hurricanes‚ was just prove if we play well on the day we can be competitive. "We enjoy it here‚ that makes a big difference. We love coming to a rugby country with good blokes. We've been doing it for so many years and the travel is the travel. We've put a lot of time and energy into the science of travel and we do things a little bit differently and touch wood it's given us a return on our investment."
