Another blow for the Boks ahead of the Rugby Championship

27 July 2016 - 18:48 By Craig Ray

Tighthead prop Frans Malherbe will miss the Rugby Championship after sustaining a neck injury during the Super Rugby campaign. The Stormers medical staff confirmed that Malherbe‚ who was one of the standout performers during last year’s World Cup‚ will be out of action for three months. Malherbe‚ 25‚ joins Stormers and Springbok teammate Siya Kolisi on the sidelines just weeks before the southern hemisphere’s most important tournament. Kolisi suffered an ankle injury during last Saturday’s 60-21 Super Rugby quarterfinal loss to the Chiefs at Newlands. The 25-year-old flank underwent surgery on Tuesday. The Stormers medical report did not highlight the exact nature of Malherbe’s neck injury and it didn’t elaborate if it was the same injury that kept him out of action for three weeks prior to the semi-final. Malherbe’s misfortune does pave the way for Stormers teammate Vincent Koch‚ who was superb in the final weeks of the Super Rugby season‚ to force his way back into the Bok squad after being dropped for the Ireland series in June. - TMG Digital..
