Mvovo‚ Hougaard return to Bok squad ahead of Australasian leg of Rugby Championship

Utility back Francois Hougaard and wing Lwazi Mvovo were on Tuesday added to the Springbok touring squad for the Australasian leg of the Rugby Championship. The Springboks take on Australia in Brisbane and New Zealand in Christchurch on September 10 and 17 respectively. They depart on Thursday‚ giving them an unusual nine-day build up to the Wallaby Test. Coach Allister Coetzee opted against making sweeping changes to the squad after last weekend’s 26-24 defeat against Argentina in Salta. Ruan Combrinck is the only member of the squad from that defeat that won’t tour after he sustained a fractured leg against the Pumas. Flyhalf Elton Jantjies has been cleared to tour after concern over a thigh injury‚ also picked up in the bruising Salta clash. Although fit to board the plane to Sydney on Thursday‚ Coetzee said that a final decision on Jantjies’ fitness would only be taken in Brisbane next week. It’s a sign of how shallow the pool of flyhalf talent is that Jantjies will tour despite a question mark over his fitness. Mvovo‚ who endured a torrid first half against Ireland in the second Test at Ellis Park in June‚ could have a chance to redeem himself in Combrinck’s absence. Mvovo was brutally exposed under the high ball by Ireland’s array of pinpoint tactical kickers. The Sharks wing’s fragility in that area of his game won’t have gone unnoticed by the Wallabies and the All Blacks. Hougaard‚ of course‚ could also operate on the wing‚ a job he has performed at Test level previously. “Losing Ruan is a setback for us‚ but injuries are part of the game and it’s good for us to be able to call on experienced players such as Lwazi and Francois‚” said Coetzee. “We are not happy with where we find ourselves after the first two matches of the campaign. Australia will pose an even tougher challenge and it is important that we deliver a much-improved performance in Brisbane.” Touring squad: Lourens Adriaanse‚ Damian de Allende‚ Lodewyk de Jager‚ Juan de Jongh‚ Faf de Klerk‚ Pieter-Steph du Toit‚ Eben Etzebeth‚ Johan Goosen‚ Bryan Habana‚ Francois Hougaard‚ Elton Jantjies‚ Steven Kitshoff‚ Vincent Koch‚ Jaco Kriel‚ Jesse Kriel‚ Francois Louw‚ Lionel Mapoe‚ Malcolm Marx‚ Bongi Mbonambi‚ Teboho Mohoje‚ Franco Mostert‚ Tendai Mtawarira‚ Lwazi Mvovo‚ Trevor Nyakane‚ Rudy Paige‚ Morné Steyn‚ Adriaan Strauss (captain)‚ Warren Whiteley. -TMG Digital..
