Zain Davids's excitement ahead of his first assignment as a potential Springbok sevens player was palpable and it's the kind of youthful exuberance SA will need in the Wellington and Sydney legs of the series.

The 20-year-old from Grassy Park is well placed to give the Blitzbokke a new lease of life without the mental stress of the damaging Cape Town Sevens Final loss and the emotional strain SA went through last season.

SA were robbed by erroneous officiating in last year's final against New Zealand and they were also subjected to the same treatment in the third-place playoff in the following leg in Australia against Fiji.

Davids carries none of this mental baggage and he just wants to play against the best.

He was one of the Junior Boks' best players at last year's Under-20 Junior World Championships.

“All I want to do in this tournament is to gain experience and try to adapt to the physicality of the sevens game‚" Davids said.

"It's been tough since I joined the training camps in December. The work we've been doing there is of high intensity and I hope it does pay off should I get the chance to play.

"I just want to do my best and make the country proud if I get a chance to play.

“The two legs I saw in Dubai and Cape Town where the team did well were of the highest standards and that's the same standards I want to attain.”

A pool containing Fiji in the Australasian leg is enough to make a novice's legs quiver‚ but the thickly built loose-forward/centre is having none of that.

Fiji have not quite hit their straps yet but they are notorious slow starters before chiming into form at the business end of the series.

Australia and Japan are not easy beats and the unpredictable nature of sevens allows for teams to make a tournament splash before disappearing for the rest of the series.

The last thing the Blitzbokke will need is a shock after the downer of losing a home final to England in Cape Town last month.

Davids was a spectator in that tournament but hopes the team can make up for the home tournament disappointment.

“Playing against a team like Fiji could be the highlight of my tournament‚ that's if I get the chance to play.

"We'll see how it goes but you can't talk about something before it has happened.

"I haven't had the chance to talk to them but they are great players and I'd like to play against them and see what it's like to play against the best‚” Davids said.
