'Diplomatic' FW to cheer for Dutch
Former South African president FW de Klerk was at his diplomatic best Friday when asked who he supported to win the World Cup final - the Netherlands or Spain.
Most Afrikaners, who are descended from Dutch settlers, back the “Oranje” but the last white president of South Africa said: “I’m neutral.
“I have Dutch blood so I will cheer for a Dutch victory but I had one of the best vacations in my life in Spain so I will be very happy for them as well,” he said.
De Klerk will be missing Sunday’s final in Soccer City to attend a engagement in Cape Town but assured he will be following the game on television.
