Sea of yellow is final record

Sapa-AFP | 12 July, 2010 00:240 Comments

Sunday's World Cup final will be remembered for a record 13 yellow cards and one red as well as for Andres Iniesta’s winning goal in extra-time for Spain.

English referee Howard Webb handed out eight yellows to Holland in an often bruising encounter in Johannesburg, as well as a red to Johnny Heitinga and five more to Spain — a record number of indiscretions for a World Cup final.

In the 2006 final there were four yellows and a red — for Frenchman Zinedine Zidane.

With Heitinga’s red card five players have now been dismissed in trophy matches.
