Comeback kids rob the Reds

Sapa-AFP, Reuters and sports staff | 29 November, 2010 00:19

Everything is going Tottenham Hotspur's way this season as Aaron Lennon scored in stoppage time to complete a 2-1 comeback win over Liverpool in an action-packed encounter at White Hart Lane.

The day's five goals took the EPL's weekend tally to 41 in 10 games, with all 20 teams scoring for the first time.

Liverpool looked lively from the start with Maxi Rodriguez twice going close from long range.

Their persistence paid off after 42 minutes when defender Martin Skrtel headed a Raul Meireles free kick into the back of teammate David Ngog and banged in the loose ball.

Rodriguez and Fernando Torres, twice, both took too long to unleash shots either side of halftime when Liverpool should have made the game safe and Spurs took advantage of their escape.

Meireles headed a Gareth Bale shot off the line but Ngog then jumped with his hands above his head when in a wall defending a Bale free kick to concede a penalty.

However, Defoe dragged his spot kick wide, Spurs's fourth miss in nine penalties this season.

Tottenham did level five minutes later, though, when Skrtel turned a low Luka Modric cross into his own goal following a driving run by the Croatia midfielder.

They took all three points when Lennon ran on to a Crouch flick two minutes from time to complete an unlikely win.

  • Chelsea missed a chance to regain top spot in the English Premier League as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Newcastle United at St James' Park earlier yesterday.

Salomon Kalou's seventh goal of the season cancelled out an early strike from England forward Andy Carroll to lift the defending champions back above London rivals Arsenal into second place.

Chelsea now trail leaders Manchester United by two points after their second-half dominance failed to yield a winning goal.
