Veteran forward Filippo Inzaghi has been omitted from AC Milan’s Champions League squad.

Inzaghi, 38, missed most of last season with a knee ligament injury but despite being available for the current campaign he didn’t make the final cut for the 25-man squad.

The former Juventus striker was the two-goal hero in 2007 when Milan last won the Champions League, beating Liverpool 2-1 in the final.

Coach Massimiliano Allegri has opted for four forwards in his squad, giving Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Antonio Cassano, Robinho and Pato  those spaces.

Another veteran, midfielder Gennaro Gattuso, has been included despite the Italian facing a four-match ban for a violent confrontation with Tottenham assistant coach Joe Jordan when the two sides met at the second round stage last season.

It means Gattuso will only be available for Milan’s last two group stage games, at home to Barcelona and away to Viktoria Plzen,  before a new 25-man list can be drawn up for the knock-out phase.

With 70 goals in the competition Inzaghi is the second most prolific goalscorer in the Champions League, three adrift of Spaniard Raul (73) who this season will play in the Europa League with German side Schalke 04.
