Young converted Stewart Downing’s first half cross with the kind  of clinical strike typical of a player enjoying a sensational start  to the season.

After moving to United from Aston Villa during the close-season,  Young has taken his game to a new level and this was third time he had found the net in his last three matches for club and country.

“It was great play by Stewart down the right and I found myself in the right position to finish it off,” Young said.

“I’m always confident going on the pitch and I’m even more confident now. I’m enjoying how things are going at the minute.

“Things have gone really well for myself and hopefully it can continue.” 

Young’s goal moved England six points clear at the top of their Euro 2012 qualifying group after they also beat Bulgaria on Friday and Fabio Capello’s team need just a draw in Montenegro in their final match next month to guarantee their place in the finals.

“We wanted to get six points out of both games and we’ve done that,” Young said.

“It’s in our hands. It’s going to be a tough game but I feel we can go there and get three points.”   

The victory over Wales was just merited despite a lacklustre second half display, but it ensured Capello’s men ended a run of four home games without a win going back more than a year.

“It was a relief to get the goal and get the three points,” Young added.

“Obviously, it wasn’t the best performance but getting the three  points was what I think we deserved.

“They put us under a lot more pressure, which we knew they would  do.

“They came and played with a lot of freedom. They’re away from home and I think teams play with a lot of freedom, especially when they come to Wembley.

“We found it difficult but we got that goal and we got the three  points.”
