Former Bafana Bafana midfielder John “Shoes” Moshoeu has passed away.

According to a Twitter post by Moshoeu's manager on Tuesday, the former Kaizer Chiefs and AmaZulu star, who was one of South Africa's greatest ever footballers, succumbed to a long battle with cancer.

Glyn Bikin tweeted: "John Shoes Moshoeu sadly passed away at 15h00 this afternoon after a long but brave battle with cancer. May his dear soul rest in peace!!

He added: "He may be gone but will never be forgotten and his family have requested their privacy and that they may be allowed to mourn in peace."

The 49-year-old Moshoeu was admitted to Charlotte Maxeke hospital where he spent some time before being discharged in February this year.

Fondly known as 'Shoes' he was part of a Bafana Bafana team that clinched the country’s only Africa Cup of Nations title in 1996. He was capped 73 times and scored 8 times for his home country.
