Mamelodi Sundowns star midfielder Teko Modise says Premeir Soccer League (PSL) players do not earn enough to allow for a decent retirement.

The former Bafana Bafana captain, who allegedly earns around R400,000 according to unconfirmed reports, told KickOff on Thursday that he believes there is a fallacy about local players that they earn big money.

“I think the mistake people make and don't talk about in South Africa is that when you are still playing they think you're getting a salary so high that when you retire you will be fine, but we're not like your Messis who get 100 000 per game,” said the two-time PSL Footballer of the Year.

“In all fairness, you can't live the same way you've been living when you were a footballer after you retire.”

Modise added: "Things are different in SA and you must understand that most footballers in SA get to play in the PSL at 27 and they need to buy their own houses and, as black people, we need to start at home first and those are the difficulties we face and not many people talk about it.”
