Former Kaizer Chiefs captain Tefu Mashamaite will not join New York City FC as expected after the MLS side decided against signing him, the player’s agent confirmed on Friday.

This follows the League’s decision to reject the club’s request to add more players for the current season, according to KickOff.

"The sports director David Lee explained what really happened and expressed his disappointment as well. Disappointing as it is, we believe its not the end of our hunt for an international opportunity for Skipper," Mashamaite’s agent Jazzman Mahlakgane told the soccer magazine.

The former Bidvest Wits skipper impressed during a 10-day trial at the US club, but it appears a possible move failed to materialise in the eleventh hour.

"Up until last night it looked more like a done deal with NYCFC, but I am sad to announce that the club wasn't granted a spot to bring Tefu on board and two other players they intended to sign," explained Mahlakgane.
