Bafana Bafana opponents Mauritania ‘refuse to be defeatist’

Mauritania might have a poor record at international level but coach Corentin Martins has warned they are not in Group M just to make up the numbers. They host South Africa in Nouakchott on Saturday in the second qualifying game for both countries on the road to the 2017 African Nations Cup finals in Gabon.“If we compare ourselves to the experience of other nations‚ then I’m tempted to say it’s mission impossible for us to qualify for the next African Nations Cup finals," said Martins."But we refuse to be defeatist. We are asking out players to go out there and win‚” he told French radio.“Our goal is to get as close as possible to the top spot (in the group). It’s true we are a small football nation‚ but we have a young team that is growing. This is all very good experience.“We must first play good games and give everything to try to get ourselves closer to the teams in our group.“For us it is exceptional to come face to face with South Africa and Cameroon. These are among the great nations of African football that Mauritania has rarely had the opportunity to meet.“For us‚ any draw would have been difficult. We have little experience on the international scene. We never had the opportunity to qualify for the finals. Facing South Africa will be a massive experience for Mauritanian football.”Martins took over as Mauritania coach in March. He won 14 caps for France between 1993 and 1997 and played at AJ Auxerre and Racing Strasbourg...
