Sundowns planning to send an invoice to Caf for the costs of the wasted trip to Algeria

Mamelodi Sundowns are contemplating whether to send a bill for over R1m to the Confederation of African Football (Caf) for the costs the Pretoria club incurred in the wasted trip to Algeria a few days ago.Sundowns beat Algeria club Entente Setif 2-0 in an African Champions League tie last weekend‚ but the joy was short-lived after Caf announced on Friday morning that the result had been wiped out of the record books after fan violence marred the match.Objects were thrown onto the field while some Algeria fans invaded the pitch in stoppage time. But Sundowns are not taking the decision lying down and they have sent communication to Caf asking if they will be reimbursed after the club flew to Sétif‚ Algeria‚ via Istanbul‚ Turkey‚ last week. The South African contingent spent a night in Istanbul and several other days in Algeria‚ and Downs officials insist that they should be reimbursed for flights‚ accommodation‚ transport and other related expenses.Sundowns officials told Times Media Digital that there is also the small matter of the $100 daily allowance that was given to the players when they were in Istanbul and in Sétif.Given that the result has been wiped out‚ the Pretoria club also wants clarity on whether the cautions that were issued by the referee to players during the game will still stand. The Champions League group is now left with three teams and as things stand‚ Downs are back to 0 points and it’s as if the game never happened. But this is not a sentiment that is shared by the Downs accountants as they have been left with a hefty bill for a match that never took place according to the silk suits at Caf. — TMG..
