Kaizer Chiefs could not show too much of their new look that has Amakhosi in high hopes of a much improved 2016-17 season‚ but Lewis Macha as a scoring substitute on debut did give a glimpse of things to come. Substitute Macha‚ on for Henrick Ekstein in the 88th minute‚ scored Chiefs’ second in the 94th minute with a fine headed finish to William Twala’s cross in Amakhosi’s 2-0 Carling Black Label Cup preseason victory against Orlando Pirates at a packed FNB Stadium on Saturday.The gimmicky format of the competition‚ where supporters vote in their starting line-ups via SMS or the internet‚ denied Chiefs coach Steve Komphela the opportunity of fielding more of his new signings.But the coach was pleased to have got off to a winning start‚ perhaps setting the tone for an improvement from his first campaign last season‚ where Chiefs finished without a trophy and in fifth place in the Premier League.“Macha‚ first goal‚ in a derby‚ in his first match – I’m happy for him. And ‘Tower’ [Mulomowandau Mathoho] as well scored a beautiful goal – I’m happy for him too‚” Komphela said.“I felt‚ the subs we made‚ in as much as we would still have liked to have shown others – there was Mitchell Katsvairo and Edmore Chirambadare still.“The first one – Tsepo Masilela going out‚ we felt we know Tsepo. And if you bring in ‘Sbu’ [Sibusiso Khumalo]‚ would you face a disaster? No. Sbu is equally capable.“Emmanuel Letlotlo for George Lebese – Letlotlo can play wide or as a striker. Bernard Parker had a great game so we opted for Lebese.“With Macha coming in Parker dropped to No.10 and we had Macha in as No.9. And then with the cross from William Twala for Macha’s goal‚ I thought Twala had a very good game.”Chiefs are a week ahead of Pirates in their preseason preparations. And it showed.Amakhosi were the far sharper and better organised side‚ penetrating Bucs’ back four regularly and dealing fairly comfortably with Pirates’ attack in defence.“The performances of both teams‚ I agree with the coach [Bucs counterpart Muhsin Ertugral]‚” Komphela said.“We are in week four of our preseason. We did not finish very well last season. We had to start this season very well.“We had to accelerate our programme‚ and see to it that come this day‚ inasmuch as we were not completely ready‚ we should be good enough to cope and come through.“We are delighted we managed to do that. There is still work to be done. We haven’t moved into our other aspects.“We’ve been strong on our fitness and endurance and biometric work so we can have explosive power.
