Khune happy to see Mathoho back to boost unsettled Kaizer Chiefs rearguard

Defensive pillar Eric "Tower" Mathoho could make a return to the Kaizer Chiefs lineup on Wednesday night and no one will be more pleased than goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune should it happen. Mathoho tore a ligament while playing for South Africa’s under-23 team in a match against Denmark in the Rio Olympic Games last month and has not featured at all for Chiefs this season.Chiefs were visibly unsettled in the back in his absence and lost two games - to BidVest Wits and newcomers Cape Town City in the league and cup respectively - in quick succession.Mathoho did not appear to be carrying any effects of the injury at training this week and could return against Platinum Stars on Wednesday night. Khune was happy to see his colleague return to the team and couldn't conceal his excitement."Tower is a very important member of the back four‚" Khune said."Remember that the goals we conceded were from crosses and Tower with his height‚ he helps the team a lot."Even sometimes when I am unsure whether to come out for a cross‚ I don't know where Towers comes from but he will just clear the ball.So for us to have him back is a morale booster." Khune said the central defensive pairing of Mathoho and Lorenzo Gordinho has worked well for the club in the past and it is now up to coach Steve Komphela to decide on which option to take."Communication is very key for us‚ especially at the back‚" Khune said."Tower and Gordhino were the defensive pairing last season and they have been working very well."We kept a lot of clean sheets when they played together. Not taking anything away from the other defenders‚ but we have got great competition and everyone wants to play."It is the coach's decision at the end of the day who to play on Wednesday and who to put on the sidelines." - TMG Digital..
